I am running an 8,000 lbs winch on my XJ, but 9,000 seems to be the norm. I am told you want a winch that will pull at least twice your vehicle weight.

Watch harbor freight for specials.  I got my 10k winch for 300 bucks and I use it hard, works great.  It is basicly a relabled mile-marker.  Watch the ads, then when you see one on sale, print off and go there and use this coupon:

I have used that coupon so many times, its awsome :-D.

And as for battery, I was running my winch on my stock battery that was dying and except for the fact I would have to stop every so offten or I would kill my Jeep, it worked.  I just bought a super high cranking/running amp battery at Walmart for 50 bucks and when I went to spool my winch up yesterday it worked great.

It is recommended that you run two batteries, but there just isn't room for it. Some people run deep cycle batteries. Another route is to upgrade your Alternater to a higher output. If you are not hard core, running a normal battery should do just fine.

I agree with all of the above. Go 8k plus. I have a 9k right now and it hasn't failed me yet. I have stalled it once but i believe that was due to voltage issue.

I second a higher output altenator when you need a new one.

Just remember the cheaper the winch the slower it goes ... I know slow is better than not at all lol. I'm running a Warn M8000 you see them for sale in 4wd.com all the time for 529. My warn helped pull out a full sized Ford .. till it really got stuck sideways lol Oh and we melted the neg battery cable end at the battery doin it LOL. But my battery is still fine !!

speed is nice, mine is slow but works awsome.  I know down in the Badlands I got operate Alice's Warn winch and it was crazy fast.

Sam's Club (Waterford) still has the Champion 10k package for $276.  Includes snatch block, Quick disconnect wiring for front and rear, and a cradle to mount to a 2" receiver.  It's slow (but it works, right Tony?) but no trouble so far.  The accessories alone are almost worth the asking price.

My other cheapo was a Harbor Freight/Chicago Electric 9500# - again it was slow, but $225 out the door with a mounting plate and warranty, no complaints.

I have never used a winch for long pulls, but for short pulls I am running Walmart batteries in everything w/stock alternators, and no problems (yet).
