Title: Peat Sorb is coming!
Post by: Paul Hittie on May 02, 2017, 12:43:19 PM
I finally found a distributor that will work with small retail customers.  If you are familiar with Peat Sorb, I will resell it to you at cost (pick up only) in whatever quantity you need/want/desire for your Jeep/shop/farm/home.

If you are not familiar with Peat Sorb, it is a modified Peat product - highly absorbent, it encapsulates hydrocarbons,  will not absorb water, and renders your spill safe for land fill OR SIMPLY LEAVE IT IN THE WOODS.  One pound will absorb 1 gallon of oil, and does not leach anything back out - it remains inert until it naturally biodegrades.  Thuis will meet the requirements of sensitive wheeling areas that require a spill mitigation kit.  The manufacturer claims a 34# bale will replace 600-900# of kitty litter.

Sound too good to be true?  I will bring a sample for demonstration to a meeting as soon as it arrives.  Until then, go Google it.

Price?  Your first guess is about 300% too high.  I am thinking I should get about 25 1gal zip lock bags out of my $80 order.  So start saving your coffee cans, coffee creamer jugs etc.  Twist on lids work best based on my unfortunate personal experience.

So pardon my engineering brain at work here...  If we are out wheeling in a "sensitive area" somewhere and we have a leak on the ground which is more likely than on an impervious paved surface how do we keep our fluid from soaking into the ground before we can get this absorbant product in place...?  Something just isn't connecting for me.

If you dump something on the spill and make the effort to catch and clean everybody is kind of happy. Stop thinking like an engineer helps also!

It's futile.  Kristina has tried for 15 years...  I'm kind of curious on this stuff.  Sounds interesting.

Option 1 - use your handy trail shovel, scoop up the contaminated soil, dump it in a trash bag with a helping of Peat Sorb, transport to a safe disposal location.  I have been told that moving "used" Peat Sorb does not constitute transporting a hazardous material through the national forest (and other similarly governed federal lands).  Technically doing the same thing with kitty litter can result in a fine

Option 2 - Drop the PS on the spill, crush it into the contaminated soil with your boot and walk away.  I am not an expert on this stuff, but I have been told since it is hydrophobic and encapsulates the hydrocarbon-based spill this is a bazillion times better for the environment than doing nothing.

Jim Mazzola did a great deal of research before settling on this product and recommending it to UFWDA a number of years ago. They used to sell "Trail Pails", but I do not see them in the UFWDA store pages any longer.

They use peat in different parts of the country and Canada to pre-treat effluent before it goes to final disposal.

I have a coffee can full of it that I will try to bring Sunday if you want to demo... try to remind me!
