I am thinking about putting a poor mans snorkel on the wife's XJ after I lift it.  It will be a snorkel from a military hummvee.  it will be right next to the windshield and only stick out a little bit.

OK - I have to ask.....do you really expect your wife to let you take her daily driver anywhere that you might need a snorkel?       ::poke::

They generally don't benefit the airflow through to the engine, and other than one time (oops) I have never been inclined to mess around in deep enough water to justify a snorkel.  Silver Lake and Connor's Hole up on DI are about the only places around where there is water on a legal trail of any depth to be concerned with, unless she is going to let you take it to the Mounds.  I'm not suggesting you don't do it, just saying why I have never done it.

Ahh... but Paul, just knowing you could go through 3' of water if you ever needed to... Isn't it worth it?

Having said that I am somehow dubious that "managment" will approve...
