Jeep Talk / New Rig
October 01, 2008, 10:55:46 PM
So, I broke down. The wrangler wasn't running as well as I wanted it to, the 4 cyl kinda sucked, and I need a five passenger vehicle.. So, I traded for this ZJ. It's pretty sweet. I dig it, and the ride is so comfortable I feel guilty after my adventures in YJ land.

http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/showthread.php?t=92271

It has 33's on it now with stock rims. I'm moved into the new house, have a capable wheeler, and life is returning to normal pace, so, hope to see you all on the trails soon. I have MFR class this sunday until 8 PM, but this is my last month of class, so.

Vehicles For Sale/Trade / 95 YJ
September 18, 2008, 09:18:11 PM
I'm going to look at a scrambler tomorrow (so the twins can wheel with the fam), if I want it, my wrangler will be up for sale. Most of you have seen it. 95, minor rust, 31's, 2.5l 5sp. 178K miles on jeep, 70xxx on engine, is running lean, tops out around 60mph.

It kind of makes me sad, the idea of selling her, but hey, sacrifices must be made.

Tech Talk / XJ Lift
July 31, 2008, 10:54:18 PM
Hey, I'm piecing together a lift on my XJ out of used parts. I'm devoting most of my cashola to it, despite it having 235xxx miles, because once the twins come, I'll need all five seats.

This is what I have, so I need just a little guidance from you more experienced peeps..

I have 2" Lift Coils and 2" Lift Blocks. I have 3" Lift Shocks for the rear, all Rusty's.

I need 3" Lift Shocks for the front, Rusty's as well.

I might throw in 1" spacers in the front and a shackle in the rear for a total of 3". I've cut the heck out of the fenders, and am hoping to clear 35's with more body modification.

Do I need to get an adjustable track bar, drop pitman arm, sway bar extension or whatever? Or is 3" not enough to really matter?

The Lounge / Mounds Monday?
June 28, 2008, 05:58:50 PM
Hey, my buddy and I are going wheeling monday at the mounds, sorry vassar is just too far for us atm. I'm fighting an overheating problem with the YJ, but even if I can't get that straightened out, I'll roll the XJ. We'll be on ground around 1-2 PM, If my cb is up I'll be on channel 19, handle is Yager, (I'd use PainKiller cause it's sweet, but you all already know me as yager). If you're not CB equiped or don't get an answer from me call my cell. 517 672 9214.

If for any reason we can't make it I'll post it on this thread, or, if you need a phone call, PM me your number.

Tech Talk / I can't get my doors off.
June 18, 2008, 08:11:42 PM
I can't get my passenger hard door off, and I just traded for some half doors I want to install. I tried lifting it with a jack, and using penetrating oil, any words of wisdom? I havn't tried pounding a punch into the hole yet..

Tech Talk / Additional Passenger in YJ Ideas
June 14, 2008, 08:51:59 PM
Alright, so I've got a few ideas on how to retain the YJ and get more small riders..

Idea 1: Move the rear seat forward eight or so inches, install a jump seat, horizontal to the vehicle, like found in the old rangers.

Idea 2: Move the rear seat REALLY far forward and try to cram another YJ/CJ seat back there..

Of course, all would have seatbelts.. My concerns are, would this be legal? (mitch?) aand, does anyone have any better ideas other than liquidating jeeps and buying a new unlimited?

The Lounge / Aaaaah!
June 14, 2008, 07:37:13 AM
So, I took my pregnant wife to her ultrasound last Thursday. Everything was going well, then the ultrasound lady said to her trainer, "Do you want to break the news?" "No, you can.." She smiled at us and said, "There's two. You're having twins."

Other than almost vomiting on my wife at that very moment, I came to a difficult and painful realization. YJ's don't hold five... Anyone know of a way to modify the back seat to make it hold five, or do the LJs and new jeeps have a wider back seat?

Tech Talk / Engine Swappage
June 10, 2008, 12:02:10 PM
Alright, I need a bit of elaboration that my hanes manual wont give..

I am changing all the accessories off my 95 blown engine onto a 93 good engine. Two things that are giving me an issue is the Distributer and the Harmonic Balancer. I know I need a puller for the balancer, but I'm wondering, will removing it mess up the timing no the engine. I don't think it will, but I just wanted to double check. Aaaand, I think it might be easier to just switch the whole timing belt case, rather than trying to pull the balancer, but can that be done, or is the balancer tied into the lower crank and needs to be removed anyway?

As for the distributer, I think I need to set the number 1 piston to top dead center, where it would fire, then drop the distributer so the rotar points at cyl one on my cap, easy right?

Does all this sound pretty good, or am I missing things here?

Parts For Sale/Trade / Hard Top
June 04, 2008, 10:31:40 AM
Just picked up a two piece hard top, it's kind of strange so I have to make sure everything fits properly, it being a two piece with clips that hold it down. But, once I've got that all figured, I'll be passing on the mighty one piece.

It's for a YJ, bolts in the rear and front, front bolt holes are stripped, so you'll need to oversize it or get reinforcement kit. It's black, no damage, not faded, with white on the inside and cheapo tint on the side windows. Heater works, washer works and wiper works.

$500 bucks? Feel free to tell me if that's too much for a hard top.

The Lounge / Wagon Wheels Spray Fest
May 28, 2008, 10:05:27 AM
So. I got those white wagon wheels from Nick I think. Anyway, I thought, well hell, let's put those on my XJ over the weekend. They've got grabber at's in 31 on them, so it seemed like a good idea at the time.

I spent the better part of four days scraping, sanding grinding and murdering my knuckles on the rust and old paint, but by Monday morning I had them cleaned up, painted black and looking alright. It's not like a factory powder coat but they're black and the paint stays on.

My wife was coming home that evening and I wanted to surprise her with the new tires. So, I got the old ones off, and rolled over one of the newly painted wagon wheels. If nick's reading this he's already shaking his head. Then I realized, those are a 5 on 5.5 bp... they don't fit..

Weekend wasted, no tires on chopped up cherokee. Moral of the story? Measure crap before you put four days of work into it.

Wanted / XJ Stuff
May 27, 2008, 10:26:05 PM
My XJ suspension is from 1989, my daughter calls it the wiggly jeep. I'm thinking maybe I need springs and shocks. If you've got a cheap lift w/ shocks. It's a 300 dollar car so I'll take what I can get, or whatever. My dream is for 31's. For safety's sake I'll settle for not rolling around corners.

Tech Talk / Engine Pull
May 06, 2008, 09:24:35 AM
Okay, so the engine pull is going.. kind of smoothly. I've got a lot of the stuff unhooked and out of the way. I started to label the wiring harness but gave up because it looks like it can only fit one way anyway. The vacuum lines are kind of a drag, didn't bother to label them.. But I did break one, a big fat one. I can't find vacuum lines on autozone.com any suggestions where I can buy some new ones?

The Lounge / Another Jeep
April 24, 2008, 11:22:27 PM
So, today I purchased a purple jeep cherokee pioneer, 89. Pretty rusty, 200+ miles, but it runs and drives straight down the road. Figure with a sawzall, some rust inhibiting paint and some bigger tires my wife can run all over the mounds in it. Now I just need a starter and new 2.5 engine.  ::ouch::

Tech Talk / My uh.. jeep wont start
April 18, 2008, 06:56:54 PM
So.. It's not the battery, even though it reads twelve I tried jumping it, didn't work. I turn the key and it just makes one little quiet clicking sound. It's not turning, just goes 'click'. I tried putting it in neutral, pushing in the clutch, in case there was some bypass or something, but I've never had to do that before, so I doubt it randomly got one now.

New Starter?

The Lounge / Scarcity
April 18, 2008, 09:46:50 AM
Pardon my not being around, I've been pretty busy with work and preparing for my final exams for fire academy. But! It's nearly over. I took my final written exam yesterday, and tommarow I'll be taking my final practical exam while you guys are tearing it up in St Helens. Then, maybe I can devote some time to fixing my ailing rig and get back in the mud.

Wanted / Wheels
March 01, 2008, 03:38:53 PM
Hey, looking for some wheels for my wife's WJ. 15" with a 5 on 5 pattern. I'm looking to mount 31 x 10.5 tires on them. I know it's a weird combo but if anyone has anything laying around, give me bump.

Tech Talk / WJ Lift
February 19, 2008, 12:21:06 AM
Hey, I'm throwing around the idea of lifting the WJ, but I don't want to pay out the crack for a huge lift. I'd like to get 31's on it, to make it capable of off road for my wife, but the only thing I can find for a reasonable price is 2" coil spacers, and I don't think that'll be enough lift to go from stock to 31's. Also, I concerned with some of the higher lift heights that it'll seriously impact highway driving, like death wobble. I'm still under power train warranty. Any suggestions?

Jeep Talk / Unheeded Warnings
February 12, 2008, 09:48:27 AM
So, when I first came onto this forum, I talked about how I was getting a YJ, and how I convinced my wife to let get it by showing off the capabilities of her Cherokee. During that exchange, which I have not the gusto to look up, one of you warned me, and I paraphrase.. careful how much you get your wife into wheelin', soon she'll want her own rig, and you'll be selling your tired old friend for something new and shiney for her to wheel.. well, I didn't listen. Though I havn't been asked to retire old Red just yet, she has asked me how much another wrangler would cost. Being the money savvy guy I am, (IE: I want to spend money on my jeep, not a new one for her!), I suggested we lift the WJ, put bigger tires on it, and she use that. She said no no, she doesn't want to damage it. And I said I would fix whatever she broke, and that it's warrantied and well insured. Then she said a sun roof isn't really the same as no roof.. So.. I suggested the old bronco down the road from my house.. She said she didn't want a pile of crap bronco, or a crappy toyota, a crumby truck, that she wants a wrangler... So, instead of buying parts. I am saving up for a trail rig for my wife.
