Jeep Talk / Atlanta ORV Routes
September 14, 2009, 12:54:54 PM
Have you sat through one of our meetings wondering what part of the state our ORV route maintenance project is in?  Or worse, have you choked on dust all day on a trail maintenance trip to Atlanta but never really knew where you were at?

The DNR has recently updated all of the ORV trail maps using recent GPS data and incorporating all of the recent changes to the system.  The area we are responsible for is detailed on this map:

http://www.midnr.com/publications/pdfs/ ... _trail.pdf

In the past, this collection of routes was called Brush Creek, Elk and Tomohawk, but is now collectively referred to as The Atlanta Route.

The complete collection of maps is at: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-15 ... --,00.html

At least that's what my calendar says, but I don't recall any discussion/planning for a picnic.  Are we having our usual meeting at the usual spot this week?

Trail Rides / Labor Day weekend
August 27, 2009, 08:33:15 AM
too much work and not enough play lately.  I need to go get dirty, considering R&V, new Bundy Hill, or if no one wants to take a road trip then I'll settle for the Mounds.

Who's in??  Where to?

Jeep Talk / skid plates
August 07, 2009, 05:58:25 PM
I am heading to rocks and valleys next weekend, and after talking to Jason at UORC I think I really need to get my skid plates installed - they don't do me much good sitting in the garage.  Anybody want to come by Sunday and lend a hand?  I have plenty of leftover adult beverages from Jonathon's birthday party... ::trout:: .

5 Tires, 4 good Gambler 15x8 Rims, 60-70% tread $350 OBO

Those awesome Three Stage Lugs do not like my very twitchy front end, just taking up space in the garage.

These are "true" 32" tires, measure almost as tall as my 33" BFG AT

Events / "Fall" route maintenance
July 10, 2009, 07:06:39 AM
Our calendar says we are scheduled to go back up August 21 to do trail maintenance again.  The only weekend my wife and I were able to coordinate our Lake Michigan fishing trip (Captain Art rocks!) is that same weekend.  Can we move our maintenance weekend without messing up everyone else's schedule for the summer?

FYI we will need lots of warm bodies for this next trip, there are several areas where we will need to drop off weed-wacker crews for several hours at a time while other groups run the rest of the trails.

The Lounge / UFWDA Endangered Species Stickers
February 25, 2009, 11:48:26 AM
UFWDA are looking to expand their distribution of e-News and critical action alerts - to accomplish this we need your e-mail address and are willing to trade a highly-coveted "Endangered Species" sticker for it.

Like all e-mail distribution lists if you choose at a later date to discontinue receiving the updates and e-News, there is an "unsubscribe" button at the bottom of each correspondence.  UFWDA does not sell your e-mail address to third parties or distribute it to third parties.

If you are interested, please send an e-mail to mailto:info@ufwda.org">mailto:info@ufwda.org to let us know.

Thanks!

Trail Rides / DRUMMOND ISLAND 4X4 ROUTES APPROVED!!
January 31, 2009, 10:02:17 AM
Posted by Pat Brower, GLFWDA LUC Chairman

Drummond Island

It's Official!

The Great Lakes Four Wheel Drive Association (GLFWDA) is proud to announce that the
Drummond Island ORV Route has been approved!

It has taken several long years and countless man-hours supplied by scores of diligent volunteers, but the process has finally come to fruition. The MDNR has announced the official designation of the Drummond Island ORV Route system. This is Michigan's FIRST ORV Route designed for the 4x4 Jeep, truck, and utility vehicle enthusiast.

GLFWDA would like to thank our coalition partners:

Drummond Island Off Road Club, Drummond Island Tourist Association, Eastern U. P. Transit Authority, Hummer Club International, Jeep Jamboree USA, and all of the dedicated individuals within the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for all of their assistance and support during this long process.

BE A PART OF HISTORY

GLFWDA invites ALL Michigan 4x4 enthusiasts to join us on Drummond the weekend of MAY 9th, 2009 to assist the Association with the installation of the confidence markers and signage for the new Route system. It is critically important that the recreational 4x4 drivers of the region show the Department, island businesses, and island residents that this route is highly desirable to enthusiasts by showing up in mass. Please wear/display your club or GLFWDA logos if at all possible. Plans are being finalized for a Saturday evening gathering after the work is completed. More information will be announced as it becomes available. Please join us!

Jeep Talk / Peatsorb
October 19, 2008, 09:26:37 AM
Some of you may have heard me mention it yesterday - GLFWDA purchased 2 bales of Peat Sorb, and Jim M volunteered to repackage it into useable size packages.  The prices are as follows:

3L ziploc - $5.00
3L hard plastic container - $6.00
8L (2 Gal) bucket - $18.00
9L Peat Sorb Bucket - $20.00
20L (5 Gal) bucket - $35.00

Per the company's website http://www.peatsorb.com/ absorbs hydrocarbon spills (oil, gas, hyraulic fluid) and encaplsulates it into a form that is safe to set at the curb with your regular trash.  Think of it as smart kitty litter.  It absorbs a bit more volume that it occupies dry, so 3L Peatsorb will suck up an oil pan spill or a large differential spill.  There are not a lot of dealers for this product, so GLFWDA bought some to repackage and resell, prices include a small markup.

Does anyone want to purchase some of this for themselves?

Do we want to start thinking about a club purchase of some of the smaller containers to serve as the starting point for a couple of standard "trail kits" for club runs - maybe adding a first aid kit and/or other items as we need them?

Joe Trager e-mailed me yesterday - he was tasked with setting up the GLFWDA run to the Mounds this weekend, but he is currently Jeep-less.  Anyone interested in leading folks through the Mounds this weekend?

Wanted / Spacers
August 19, 2008, 09:58:39 PM
Anyone have a set of 3/4" or 1" spacers lying around?  Seems like my RE1600 track bar is designed for more lift, but my favorite off road shop didn't know that.
