Thanksgiving Day is fast approaching.  Our annual food drive for the Food Bank of Eastern MI takes place at the Mounds ORV park on Thanksgiving Day, which is the busiest day of the year at the park.  We need three teams of volunteers:

Wednesday evening (appx 2 hours, 3:30-5:00-ish)  We need about 6 people to set up for the event - we have a big 10x20 shelter plus 2 smaller Easy Up-style shelters, plus moving some tables, setting up electrical connections, etc.

1.  Paul
2.  Mark & Wendy
3.  Brent
4.  The Daron's
5.  Ed
6.  Anthony & Tyler

Thanksgiving early morning (appx. 4 hours 6am to 10am)  We need a minimum of 4 people to start the coffee and hot water, set out snacks and collection boxes, distribute flyers and collect donations.

1.  Kevin
2.  Denis
3.  Mark & Wendy
4.  Brent
5.  The Daron's
6.  Jim & Jane

Thanksgiving late morning (appx 4 hours 9am-1pm)  We need a minimum of 6 people to continue to distribute flyers and collect donations, and as the crowd thins out to start organizing the boxes of donations for delivery to the Food Bank, and break down the shelters.

1. Ed
2. Russ
3. Paul & Jonathon
4. The Erwins

The Lounge / Ham radio training
November 02, 2016, 02:32:21 PM
I reached out to the Genesee county amateur radio club, and their related organization MSCG (Michigan Specialized Communications Group), to see if I could talk someone into coming out to one of our meetings or events to give us some hands-on training with our Ham radios.  I still have not been able to set that up, but several folks suggested to me that those in or close to Genesee County should consider participating in one one of the regular Net traffic nights hosted by the group.  It is a good opportunity to listen and/or participate on the net and learn protocols and best practices in a very low-key environment.

Please join us tonight for the Wednesday Night Traffic & Training Net!
Wednesday Evenings, 8:00PM
147.26 MSCG "James Hainer" Repeater +600 Split 100Hz PL.
This net exists to:
Provide a place to share announcements relating to the ARPSC and the general amateur radio community.
Be an access point to the National Traffic System (NTS).
Provide net control training and experience.
Be a platform that encourages hands-on experiences.
Encourage the newcomer to learn more about Amateur Radio.
Be a platform to discuss technical information.
Re-assure the newcomer that the net exists especially for them as well as the long-time veterans of Amateur Radio.
Welcome diverse topics that encourage productive discussions among its members.

In summary a net should encourage and inform!
The Net is a general discussion and training net available to all radio amateurs. There are also opportunities for announcements and passing NTS traffic.

You can join us on the 147.26+ (100hz for direct access to the repeater or 88.5hz for the HT remotes). You can also connect via Echolink by searching for "KC8KGZ-R".

Don't have time to participate for the entire net? Here's some options that still allow you to show your support for the net.

Short-time check-in - This tells the net control station (NCS) that you only have a few minutes and they will ask you for your comments at the beginning understanding that you can't stay for the entire net
In and Out check-in - This tells the net control station (NCS) that you're just checking into the net to get on the roster, but you won't be sticking around to make any comments.

Jeep Talk / Diesel JK...JL?
October 25, 2016, 07:47:11 AM
Interesting observation on my way to Farmington Hills this morning. Flame red 4-door Wrangler, about 3 inch lift, off-road tires, Fox reservoir shocks, 35 inch tires comma and a manufacturer's plate. Oh and as I drove by, the rattle rattle rattle of a diesel under the hood. Could it be that after 9 years of waiting we're finally going to see a diesel 4 door that really really happens??

The Lounge / 14 feet of orange - back on the road!
September 03, 2016, 06:10:30 PM
Wow, long last 6 weeks of summer.  Working like a dog, and no Jeep to enjoy on my free time - I even took the family truckster up north to do trail maintenance last weekend.  But no more - Jonathon and I finally gave up on trying to unbolt the mangled control arm and got the grinder and sawzall out.  So new catalytic converters (yes there really are 3 on my '05), replaced the mangled stock control arm temporarily with another OEM arm, and we finally installed the new Zombie Apocalypse LEDs on the front bumper.  Hit the road this afternoon for a sunny afternoon trip to go do siren testing for Genesee County, only to discover something in my memorized channels wasn't working on my 2m radio, and by the time I figured it out the test was over.  Drove to Home Ave & DuPont and sat in the parking lot for half an hour for nothing.  But we were out in the Jeep, the sun was shining, life is good!

The Lounge / Lazy guy update
August 10, 2016, 03:10:25 PM
I have to admit, I have been doing it a lot more lately...I took my Jeep over to our favorite local mechanic to see what was wrong with my Jeep instead of trying to replace my catalytic converters myself.  But at the end of the day, he had a source for a less expensive aftermarket part which including installation was less than what the part was going to cost me.  Now back to replacing my springs and control arms.

Who did we pass yesterday?  I have not seen one of the banners on the road yet, by the time I realized you were one of us I was already past you.

Jonathon and I (Hittie's Crawlers") are making our plans to head back to The Iron Range OHV Park in Gilbert MN in July (unfortunately the same weekend as the club's Silver Lake trip) for Crawl 4 the Cure 2016 - a fundraiser for multiple sclerosis.  For those that do not know about MS, it strikes primarily between ages 20 and 40, more women than men, and more people are diagnosed in colder climates than warm.  There is no known cure, only treatments to manage symptoms, and some types of MS are resistant to management.  Every MS patient is different, most cannot be identified in a crowd because the symptoms are internal, but there are an estimated 400,000 patients in the US alone.

To learn more about our efforts or to make a donation  please go to:

http://main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/Hitties_Crawlers

If you have nothing better to do the 3rd weekend in July and want to tag along, let me know and I can send you more information.

Trail Rides / Last Sunday in February - 7th Installment
February 03, 2016, 07:30:49 PM
Tax season is here again, and my opportunities to get out of the office and play are far and few between. Although this has become a club run for WLB, we have also extended an invitation to our fellow GLFWDA members. Here are the details:

-Meeting places - Two options, meet us at the Mt Morris rest area on I75N @ 8am, or @10am in the WalMart parking lot in West Branch gassed up and ready to go
-Lunch on the trail
-Normal trail safety and etiquette rules apply - you must have front and rear tow points, a CB radio, mechanical issues fixed before you show up and no big drips/leaks
-If you bring your kids, bring a sled
-The snow is unpredictable. No minimum tire size/locker/winch requirements, but if the snow is deep and you show up with bald 28" highway radials, we may leave your truck behind and throw you in someone else's truck for the day

The most important requirement is that you bring both a sense of humor and a sense of adventure - our last Sunday in February runs are not polished, practiced and/or well organized. We go out, hit the trails and have fun, do a little exploring, and head for home when it gets dark.

The What Lies Beyond Jeep Club of MI has grown to the point where we will probably head out in two groups for the day, at least one group will be heading to the St Helen MSA so make sure you have a valid set of ORV permits on your truck. Hope to see you there!

Jeep Talk / Electrical issues - Ford F150
September 08, 2015, 10:14:22 PM
Anybody speak Ford electrical?  Jonathon's new '99 F150 has no right brake/blinker.  Tail light works.  No juice at the light socket, no juice at the trailer harness (factory trailer wiring harness) and no juice at the big plug Inside the frame.  The F150 forum said the multi function switch was probably to blame, but that didn't work either.  Everything else works fine including the left side.  The master of jury rigging in me says we need to find the wire coming out of the multi switch and tap it, run a new wire to the back.  Not sure if that kind of work-around would screw up the feedback loop, not sure if I care.

Thoughts/suggestions?

I mentioned it a few months ago, but Jonathon and I are finally registered for Crawling 4 The Cure, a fundraiser held by the MN Chapter of the National MS Society.  My mother was diagnosed with MS in 1986, but she and we have been very fortunate in that her illness has not destroyed her like it has so many others.  Being able to combine a wheeling event, a father-son vacation, and a fundraiser was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

We have created our own fundraising page on the MS website:

http://main.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR/DoItYourselfFundraising/MNMDIYEvents?px=12106849&pg=personal&fr_id=24632

and the MN chapter of the MS society has more of the details of the event posted at:

http://main.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR/DoItYourselfFundraising/MNMDIYEvents?pg=team&fr_id=24632&team_id=430381

If you can afford to donate to the MS Society and help our cause, we would be grateful.

Events / Last Sunday in February, Episode 6
February 25, 2015, 08:45:06 PM
For those that have been around a while, our Last Sunday in February runs have been full of friends, snow, Jeeps and good times for the past 6 years.  We have traveled to St Helen, West Branch, and Grayling.  We have also invited new friends, new members, GLFWDA members and old members alike.  Some years we go exploring, some years we stick to more familiar trails, but we always have a good time.  This year was no different - Shawn from SoFO/GLFWDA took us out North from West Branch on some old, less traveled trails.  Great scenery, a couple of great tight and twisty trails, and we got everyone back in one piece.  Thanks to everyone who came out, it was a great break from my busy work schedule this time if year.
