Tech Talk / Offroading Helpful Hints:
November 10, 2007, 09:30:17 AM
Not sure where to exactly post this, but here are a couple of offroading tips that I picked up over the past few years. If you have any good tips, feel free to post them up too.

Tip #1:
Before going to your favorite mud hole, put a nice coat of cooking spray like PAM on your vehicle. This will help prevent the mud from sticking to the vehicle and makes for an easy washing. It also leaves a nice shiny appearance after washing.

Tip #2:
For those people that have winches on their vehicles. You can take a hockey puck, drill out a 3/4 to 1" hole (depending on your cable size), take the hook off the end of the cable, thread the cable through the hole in the puck, reinstall the hook and now you have a nice cheap winch saver. You can reel your winch all the way up to the roller flares without having to hook the cable to something on your vehicle. With a little modification to the puck, you can also add some weight to it and use it as a cable surpressent so in the event your cable snaps, it will drop to the ground and not come flying back at your.

The Lounge / Watch Jeep events on your cell phone
October 25, 2007, 07:23:53 PM
Not sure if this article was old or not, but found it interesting.

Jeep Launches Its Own Mobile Phone Channel
In an effort to harness mobile phone TV as a major branded entertainment medium, Jeep is launching its own mobile phone channel with MobiTV.
The content is available to about 500,000 subscribers using Cingular Wireless L.L.C., Sprint Nextel Corp., Alltel Corp. and other mobile networks.

The Jeep "channel" is one of the first network-like properties to be established on the mobile phone. About 40 million mobile-phone subscribers have multimedia phones capable of receiving TV video content. But it's not clear how many are actually inclined to watch TV on a tiny screen.

The content is currently available to about 500,000 subscribers using Cingular Wireless L.L.C., Sprint Nextel Corp., Alltel Corp. and other mobile networks.

Tech Talk / Making a custom driveshaft?
October 19, 2007, 01:43:55 PM
Has anyone here had dealing with American Body & Equipment with making or working on their driveshafts? I had them do work on a driveshaft about 18 years ago for my Power Wagon, but I only had it for a short time before it got totaled and never really got to test out the driveshaft they made. I had a brainstorm for some reason while on lunch today and came up with a couple of ideas on making a custom CV driveshaft without having to install a SYE kit in my transfer case. Thought about going to American Body since they are just down the street to prototype for me, but am not to sure of their quality.

Thanks
Steve

I was bored last night and this morning so I pulled up the youtube and started watching some offroading videos from around the word. That kind of got me pondering. Does the name Jeep have the same definition today as it did years ago? Here is what the Merriam-Webster's Dictionary says what a Jeep is.

Main Entry: 1jeep
Pronunciation: 'jEp
Function: noun
Etymology: probably ultimately from Eugene the Jeep, character in the comic strip Thimble Theater by Elzie C. Segar
: a small general-purpose motor vehicle with 80-inch wheelbase, 1/4-ton capacity, and four-wheel drive used by the United States Army in World War II; also : a similar but larger and more powerful United States army vehicle

When I was in Singapore for a couple of weeks about 15 or so years ago, the natives there referred to the Suzuki Vitara and the GEO Trackers as Jeepies.  I was watching some Russian video's this morning on a vehicle they call the UAZ, which is their version of our Wrangler, which by the way after watching the videos for these things, I want one of them. In one of the videos I was watching, there was a comment made that Jeep in no longer a Trademark name, but a classification of vehicles.

So in today's day and age, is Jeep still considered a Trademark name or has it now become a classification of different makes and models of vehicles? Should the GEO Trackers, Suzuki Vitara's, Defender 90's, Land Rovers, or any other type of small SUV be called Jeeps also?

I must say also that I was quite impressed as how well the Suzuki Vitara's do offroad when I was watching a series of videos on them. I watch one video where one of them just climbed up a steep vertical hill with out much of any trouble and highly dought my XJ would have even made it up that hill.

Here are some pics of me and some friends playing around on a friends field this past weekend.

My spotter wasn't paying more attention to taking pictures then watching me about to run over a huge bolder. Ended up denting my rear driveshaft really good and just about crushing my muffler.

Hey everyone

I have just moved to Flint a few months ago and have seen a few of your members driving around in the area so I thought I would stop by and check out your site. I have been out of four wheeling for the past few years and have just started getting back into it. I was trying to hook up with my old club, Huron Valley Offroader, but I think they might have disbanded. I see that your organization is in my area, so I thought I would check this out and see if I would interested in joining your club. I was planning on stopping by at Sharky's this weekend to introduce myself, but I see that you have rescheduled the meeting until next weekend, so I guess I will stop by next weekend and check out what What Lies Beyond is all about. Will be looking forward to meeting the members of your organization.
