We have another guy hooked now

Hey guys,
We wheeled a couple weeks ago with Rachel in the white JKU and then Sunday she came back with her family.  Her dad is my buddy and he got pretty hooked on this whole thing.  I really hope they join.  They are great people and will fit in fantastic, his hole family is very awesome.

Anyway, he's pretty hooked but they don't want to beat up Rachel's JKU understandably.  He found a sort of YJ that he and I are going to look at Wednesday.  I say it's sort of a YJ because:

current owner says it's licensed as a '95 but it's more like a CJ-7 ??????
It does not have the leaf springs but now has coil springs
hard top
the whole bottom and tub have been painted with rhino truck bed covering
full roll bar
6000LB winch
air compressor
air lockers (brand unknown)
Hi lift jack
new clutch
street tires (he said the bigger aggressive ones were too loud on the road)
4.0 Liter
5 speed stick
He didn't know exactly how many miles on it but thought mid 100's
I'm not sure of the lift height or brand
He is asking 8k

I'm confused about the YJ CJ7 thing.
When we look at this Wednesday what should we be looking for besides the stuff I'd look for on a TJ?  Anything YJ specific?
Does anyone else smell that?  Smells like burnt hot dogs and transmission fluid!

naypalm

Make sure the 4x4 engages and check the wipers as they are both vacuum controlled. Also check for steering fluid leaks. Other than that, if you can't hear/see the road thru the floor, then its probably a good buy. The coils make a huge difference out on the trail.

J's Jeep

Not sure about the whole YJ/CJ7 thing(Frankenstein?).
Look at the frame real good.  Where the straight frame starts to curve up in front of the rear wheel well can be rusted along with the notorious spot where the steering box bolts to the frame.  I would hope that it comes with good, large tires as well as the street tires.
Maybe there's a nice blue, well equipped, well built '91 YJ in his future(he saw it Sunday)...just sayin.

There's some missing info here:
Axles? Gear ratio? Tire Size? What kind of tires? Went to coils but what did the guy use for control arms / bushings?  Is this homemade or done in a shop?
The whole yj/cj thing is it just a CJ front clip on a YJ as described here http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/body-chassis/154-0905-turn-your-yj-into-a-cj/
Or is it something more?
6000lb winch? Is this a typo, or did that guy get a goofy sized winch for a reason?

Here's the big one before he goes and buys someone else's (possible) problem, How mechanically inclined is Rachel's Dad? Does he need an instruction manual to change light bulbs or can he rebuild a motor with his eyes closed?

$8000 is a pretty decent budget to work with. Here's some options:

Hey Jim,
I can let him know but only if you're buying another Jeep.  If it means you're getting out of it then I'm not saying a word!

Ryan, as always a wealth of information.  Thanks for the heads up.  I'd personally rather see him get into one that is owned by someone in our club.  Sounds like one member maybe thinking his blue Jeep could be for sale????

For $8000 I'd throw an offer at the xj in my first of the options listed.  That thing is pretty sick

What XJ?

Holy cow.  That XJ is bad a$$.

I'm going to have to show that to Michelle.  Maybe it'll be mine for Drummond Island.

I think there are way to many not sure/unkonwns to drop $8,000 on that... Like Ryan said, $8,000 is a decent budget and I would rather pay a little less for somebody's stcok YJ and have some budget left over to build it with a some known quantities.

Bill called and left a message on the XJ.  He's really hoping it's not sold.
