I contacted Nancy Edwards from Genesee County Parks last night while we were at the meeting, and this morning, not only did she send the permit application, but she threw down the gauntlet of challenge:

Of course you CAN (pun intended!)!

You know it might be kind of fun to arrange the cans in the shape of a Jeep...just something to spice it up a bit!  It would require a bit more planning, like asking people to bring a certain kind of food so the colors match, etc.  Check out this website to see what I'm talking about, http://www.canstruction.org.

Can we do our canned food drive again this year? If so, please send me a permit application.

You have to check out the website she suggested - some really clever people. organizing cans in all kinds of creative ways.  I like her suggestion of trying to do a Jeep, and it might give us a bit of a PR push if we can come up with both a design that is simple enough to complete on Thanksgiving morning, and give us a specific list of stuff ask people to bring.  You know and I know that cash goes farther for the Eastern MI Food Bank than canned/dried goods, but it sure would be a hoot to put together.

Cool Concept, but I don't think one we could cobble together out of donated cans throughout the day... The website reccomends having an architect or engineer on your design team and suggests a 12-16 hour build time.  Trying to make it come together from what comes in throughout the day just wouldn't work in my mind, even if we did try to "mandate" the types of cans.  I can only see us doing the sculpture ourselves with club purchased cans... WHich I think would be a cool posibility - draw people over and make the more likely to donate $$ to support the build so to speak.  If we did a flat design rather than a 3D sculpture we might be able to design it ourselves and do it without and extraordinary amount of cans, but we need to start design and the requistion pretty soon...I have some hotel time this week... maybe I can play around with some graph paper and see what I can come up with...

OK, here is a concept I came up with... It is a jeep drawing using cans turned on their sides in a mosaic type pattern.  I don't think we have the time/resources to actually track down different color cans, so I am thinking we could just paint the bottoms of the cans.  We would have to have something like a plywood backer with 2x4 side walls to hold the cans in place.  MY idea is that we would set this up and build the jeep image up to the hood, and then allow people to drop in their cans to fill in the windshield. While I can see this being workable, and a great way to draw people over/get donations, the problem is it requires 260 cans from the club.  We could try to go to walmart/meijer and get a great price on bulk cans of soup or something, but even at 50 cents per can we are talking $130 to start plus paint and materials for the frame.  None of thepics from the canstuction website seem to have this side view concept...not sure if it is worth pursuing or not...

I've got $20

What size?  Or do you want my cash to buy them all at the same time?

I would probably wait if we decide to do it and get all the money together and go play lets make a deal at Meijer and see what they can give us 260 cans of...

Looks great Ed, you put alot of planning and effort into this. For the colors I'd use construction paper circles taped the the bottom of the cans, easier to take off than paint.

If we can get 10 people to bring in 20 cans each, thats 200 right there. I'm sure we can scrounge together some cans.

LPM606

Construction paper is a good idea, but much more labor intensive... We would need to sit around and cut 260, 2.5" paper circles.  I guess I could give it a whirl this weekend. Where can you buys sheets of just one color consturction paper?? I think rather than having a hodgepodge of cans come in, I want to go buy 260 of the exact same can.  Campbells soup or canned veggies maybe. whatever is cheap!

What if we were to buy these

2 1/2" diameter labels

and print the colors we wanted.

LPM606

I see usburning through a ton of ink doing these - 6 sheets of blacklabels needed, 10 sheets of Jeep Color,5 sheets of sky blue, etc. But, bring all ideas tothe meeting sunday and we will figure it out...

Excpet that there will likely be overspray on the soup labels themselves... maybe I will call and ask them...
