Quote from: "LPM606"Sounds like a nice Waggy, but it has to be be hard to part with the Rubi...That thing has literally been around the world with you.

So true....I have been back and forth on selling it for quite a while now. Actually, I figure that buying the GW will help to motivate me to get it ready to sell. That and my wife won't let me buy anything for it until the Rubi is sold and I already have a list going of stuff I want to do with it (fuel injection kit being the first thing, I think). Well....that and I am kind of looking for a classic to restore. So whatever is left over from the sale of the Rubi and doesn't go into the GW will probably go toward something like that (although...I am beginning to wonder if the GW is my classic and I should be looking for another daily driver??  :D ).

In all honesty it is about time. I need something just a tad more comfy on the highway since Melissa and I are driving to Saginaw more often these days. Plus, she doesn't drive clutch (although I have tried to teach her) so we need something a little more "wife friendly" as well so I can take the truck when I need to and she still has a vehicle that she can drive.

Does it sound like I am justifying this yet?

Tech Talk / Re: Tj Front Drive Shaft

Just went through a front driveshaft replacement in my '04 Rubicon. Although I believe the lengths are different then your '99, I had Tatton drivehsaft build me a custom CV shaft for $250 (+ free shipping)....not a bad deal and it is really well built. Might be a good alternative to a stock one. I think I found the lengths for mine on Quadratec by doing a quick search for front drive shafts and then matching up what I needed. They had all the specs lined out on their website.

Well...it looks like we are officially the proud owners of a 1986 Grand Wagoneer. Its been completely redone with 10,000 miles on the engine, tranny, and transfer case, new interior, new 4" lift and new 31" all terrains. There really isn't anything left anymore that hasn't been gone through or replaced except the axles and the wiring harness at this point. I will try and post up some pics as soon as I can. The unfortunate part is that the beast is sitting in NC waiting for me to pick it up....so there is a road trip in my future for this weekend!!

There are two quater sized surface rust spots that will need to be taken care of before they spread and the wood grain vinyl panels are beginning to fade a little, so I am probably going to replace those as well (although the "naturally patina is kinda cool to me). I am also going to need to change out the 4wd vacuum motor ($50) to get the 4wd working again. Other than that, though, it is spot on.

This is going to be my daily driver and I have to pay my bank account back...so it looks like the Rubicon is going to be up for sale in the next few weeks. I will also have a boat load of spare Wrangler/Rubicon parts up for grabs once the Rubi is sold. Just matters on what the new owner will want to take with them. Keep an eye out in the For Sale section in the next few weeks for some parts and the Rubi!

Quote from: "ouchman"good luck, and where you getting your front shaft? i might need one.

Tatton Driveshaft...they custom built me one with greasable joints and using Spicer parts for $250/free shipping. Not a bad deal. It just arrived last night. It's no Tom Woods shaft, but it is BY FAR an improvement overstock and very well made. And so far is well worth the price. They say they are trail tested, but we will see if it can withstand my "trail testing"  :P

If my front driveshaft arrives with enough time to get it installed, I may make this one. Will let you all know.

So I bought a pen torch (that heats to over 2000 degrees) and a Gator socket this weekend. So with those and some of the tools I already have, I should be able to get these bolts off when the new shaft arrives. Stay tuned for the new adventures!

Moolenaar begins petition drive opposing proposed changes to Huron-Manistee forest use management plan
Friday, February 04, 2011

LANSING – State Sen. John Moolenaar said today that he opposes a proposed land and resource management plan that would ban firearm and snowmobile use within certain areas of the Huron-Manistee National Forests.

"Communities throughout this region have come to rely upon the existing recreational attractions offered within the forests," said Moolenaar, R-Midland.  "Any limitations or restrictions would greatly impact area residents, tourists and local economies at a time when Michigan cannot afford to restrain growth and development opportunities."

Moolenaar is collecting signatures for an online petition to oppose the plan being considered by the Huron-Manistee National Forests.  To sign the petition, please go to http://www.SenatorJohnMoolenaar.com.

"My office has been inundated with calls, e-mails and letters from concerned residents that oppose the changes," Moolenaar said.  "Hundreds of people have attended area meetings and have expressed their disagreement with this concept.

"These forests have served as a staple for countless rural communities in the 36th Senate District by providing the means for commerce and tourism. I join with community leaders and local residents in standing against this unnecessary change."

Here is the letter between John Moolenaar and Huron Manistee National Forests:

Quote from: "Nosilla"support the tail of the transfer case and drop the skid plate then you will be able to see that you are doing without bending into a pretzel. If you cut the heads off and removed the shaft at the axle you would be able to pull it out that way also.......it would take awhile with a dremel thought but it would get it done at least.

Funny you should say that....I was laying in bed last night thinking about dropping the skid plate. Then I should at least be able to get a cut off wheel in there or something.

Thanks for the ideas. Gonna put this one into effect probably tomorrow.

Quote from: "Nosilla"you could maybe tighten the bolts till they break. Have a nut welded to the heads to use another wrench.

I thought about that, but I don't think there's enough access to get in there to weld nuts on. Plus you wouldn't be able to see to weld them.

I was thinking if I could maneuver vise grips in there well enough to get a good enough grip, that might work to turn them. I tried it once, but am going to give it another try when I am not so frustrated and can get a fresh perspective on this fiasco.

I've also thought about cutting the bolt heads off with a Dremmel or something small enough to get in there. Unfortunately, I think the threads of the bolts would keep the CV from sliding away from the CV yolk at the transfer case. Maybe drilling them out, but I don't think I could fit a drill motor in there.

I can pull out the Ujoint retaining rings and probably wiggle the shaft out from the CV that way, but that won't solve the problem of removing the CV from the yoke at the transfer case. It might give me a little more room to maneuver, though, without trying to work around the driveshaft.
