Tech Talk / Re: D44 Axle Build (Dana 44HD Thoughts)

Mark (president) rebuilt my d30 and after seeing how much $ and  time was put into it he just bought a G2 axle assembly. Equivalent to a d44 with heavy duty every thing.

This was my initial thought as well. If I go this route though, I'd be able to have a axle housing with just about as much strength as a core 44 (if my assumptions are correct) for the same budget except I'd be able to go with 35 spline RCV shafts as I have a friend who will do the labor for free. I'm just trying to ensure that J8 housing will be as stout as an aftermarket one.

Tech Talk / D44 Axle Build (Dana 44HD Thoughts)
June 29, 2018, 03:24:52 PM
I'm at the point where I'm exploring building up my axles. I currently have the D30 up front and wanting to go to a 44. I've looked at quite a few housing options and was wondering if anybody has an opinion on the Mopar D44HD that uses the J8 tubes (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/dcc-5160036). Is this the same axle used in the Recon? If so, it should also have stronger inner C's, right?

For a heavier duty housing, I can get it for a decent price compared to other options on the market.

Thoughts?

Awesome, I'm over in Imlay City. I'll be sure to keep my eyes out for your Jeep.

Welcome to the forum! Where about in Lapeer County?

Yeah, I happened to find those two who were already going out so it worked out very well. I love the Jeeping community!

I was very surprised at how sandy it was up there. I'm starting to learn how little of Michigan I've experienced. It was crazy to see the drastic terrain change between St. Helen and West Branch.

The ridge grapplers outperformed me. They tackled everything I threw at them except one sand hill but that's because I had accidentally locked my max gear in first  ::) I had them aired down to 15psi and was very happy with them. If I was more experienced, I might find their limits but chances are these will out before that happens.

Unfortunately I can't make it out there this weekend... But definitely post some pictures if you do end up wheeling!

I know it's Blessing of the Jeeps weekend but the wife and I already had plans to be in West Branch. Let me know if anybody wants to meet up and run some trails on Saturday.

I'm getting ready to lift my Jeep and throw on some 35's. I currently have 3.21's (according to my build sheet) and I'm looking at Yukon 4.56. I'm ready and willing to do a lot of work myself but this is something I want to get right. I know of Unlimited Off Road in Fenton but does anybody else have any other shop suggestions?

Well, I ordered the 3.1s but Teraflex decided to dropship the 3.3s. I decided to go the honest route and let them know. I work in e-commerce so I anticipated their response and like I assumed they said to keep them as they didn't want to deal with return shipping and then shipping out the correct new set.

Needless to say, they've earned my loyalty.

Ken, I plan on making it to the meeting. Thanks for posting the details.

My wife and I travel to TN a few times a year for hiking and now to go trail riding so that works perfectly.

Looking forward to seeing everybody on the 8th!

Hopefully I'll have my new wheels/tires soon so that I can get this installed... Just Empty Every Pocket is all too real.

Hello Everybody!

My name is Jack and I'm from Imlay City and work in Flint at a suspension shop. I honestly can't remember how I found this group, but I'm glad I did. I purchased a 2012 JKU Sahara back in December and am slowly building it up. My end goal is to build it into an overlanding rig. I'm a member of quite a few FB groups but nobody seems to be very active in this area. I'm looking forward to meeting members from here and becoming an active member of the community!
