Title: Very important trail ride Dec 1st. 11am. Rose City, Michigan

From GL4x4

QuoteIF YOU PLAN ON GOING, PLEASE POST IN THIS THREAD: http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/showthread.php?t=64411 (http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/showthread.php?t=64411)

Date: December 1st, 2007.
Time: 11:00AM
Where? 2374 Lentz Rd. Rose City, MI 48654
Cost: $15.00 Per Vehicle.

A collective effort on the part of GL4x4 and GLFWDA has yielded a great opportunity for the Lower Michigan 4x4 enthusiasts.

Myself, Whiterhino, kb8ymf, Ironman, Skip, Tab, and Stan had the opportunity to meet with the owner of OSTC (Ogemaw Sport And Trail Center) this prior Saturday.

The owner, Dean runs a very successful quad and dirtbike facility. He used to allow dune buggies to run the trails back in the day, but he switched to only quads and dirt bikes 4-5 years ago.

OSTC consists of over 125 acres of rock hills, sand hills, winding trails, tight and twisty trails, as well as some very very very tough hill climbs consisting of mud/sand/rock.

You cannot ask for a better piece of land to start with for a 4x4 facility.

We approached Dean with a very large powerpoint presentation showing the need for a full size vehicle recreation development with MULTIPLE CHALLENGE levels. Multiple challenge levels would be the most important part. There are currently NO legal spots in Michigan (aside from the mounds) where you can do a nasty hill climb, drive over rocks, blaze your own trails, etc. Dean's property has a great BASIS for building this type of facility.

Currently the property consists of many trails, many hill climbs, rocks (scattered) and lots upon lots of winding trails.

There are a couple hills that our very heavily modifed rigs (SBC/37"+ Tires/F/R Lockers) could not physically get up. I tried climbing a very winding hill climb, only to get stopped (physically) by a large tree. The point is, it has some challenging stuff.

It also has some nice and easy sand hills, as well as some compacted rock/soil hills.

It already appeals to a large audience of 4x4 owners. And more importantly, its located in Michigan.

Here is our goal: We want to show up in force on December 1st, to show the owner that there IS a need for a 4x4 facility in Michigan, and that it would get used. If the turnout is good, we can then encourage Dean to move in tons of rocks, etc. He has already given us permission to make log climbs, and that is being handled internally via myself and GLFWDA. When we finalize this, we will be making a post for helping hands.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not call the owner and ask him to ride his trails. Because of insurance regulations, you will not be allowed to do so. We are hoping for the opportunity to have this property open to 4x4 users once every 6-8 weeks. Remember, he runs a very very busy quad/motocross facility, and because of safety reasons he does not want to have bikes/4x4's on the course at the same time.

The property is located 10 miles south of mio and 10 miles east of west branch.

Here are some photos, and hopefully the other people who helped put this together can chime in with other information. Thanks!

CLIFF NOTES:
We have a great opportunity to encourage a local business owner to build something that most travel 5-10 hours to enjoy.

OSTC's website can be found here:

I am asking for the time off today,  I seen a couple of names on the list from here.  Maybe we can all meet up and convoy there.

I bet it ends up being 125+ total and about half that will actually show up.

Still awesome to say the least.

Jim K and Jim M figure about 60 vehicles would be the most that would keep things fun and not over crowded.  So if 1/2 of the 125 show, that's just about right.  Shows the owner "build it and they will come".

That is will. Just to bad it won't be a daily thing, rather than the once every 6-8 weeks

I won't drag you into this, but you better drag a few unwrapped toys up there.  There will be a Toys for Tots donation center at the event, so let's make sure that WLB shows up all the other boards that will be in attendance.  (yah, I DID go there   )

One would be suprised what a gasser KJ can actually do.  It's no Wrangler, but it's a tuff little machine.  Especially with the right tires.

Just thought I would post up a fresh thread with a recap.

Gates open at 9:00. Please don't come early as we will be getting ready and those that are helping need to get in.

Helpers should be there by 8:30 am.

When you arrive you will be greated by a person handing out info for the day and maps of the property.

Insurance is required and will be checked by the greeters so please have it available. A full roll cage and 5 point harness will waive the insurance requirement.

Parking will be tight so please don't take up more space than required. Helpers will be there to direct parking.

Alcohol is not allowed in the trails and will be treated with zero tolerance. I have been approached by a police officer who will be there & he will enforce the alcohol rule. Let's all make this a non issue. Per the owners request, we will be doing cooler checks.

This is more of a social gathering than a day of wheeling. There will be plenty to do and see but please plan on spending time mingling in addition to trail riding.

Due to the tight congestion expected, we will have monitors on the 3 major hills. Each hill will be monitored by a different CB channel. When you approach a hill and are asked to switch to a specific CB channel, please do so. This will allow for safe communication throughout the park.

There will be signs posted thru the woods for clarification. Please stay out of the pond. There is no mud on this property.

Special note: There are a few hills where there is a steep dropoff as you crest the hill. Please be extremely cautious of this.

For those that want to do more trail riding, there are state forest trails that can be ridden. Ask and someone can give you directions.

The owner has informed me that no open vehicles without a roll bar will be allowed. Seat belts are required.

If you are bringing alcohol to enjoy around the fire afterwards & don't have a tow vehicle to leave it in, you can leave it at the pavilion where the bonfire will be. If you are concerned about it, see me and you can lock it in my enclosed trailer.

We will be providing dogs, buns, chips, etc for a social time starting at 4:00 pm. Donation jars will be out and donations are appreciated. Bring your own drinks. We will have koolaid and coffee. Look for the group around the bonfire under a pavilion.

If you need to go out for food, there is a McDonalds and DQ in Rose City or you can go to the Clear Lake bar which is about 20 minutes away. Grocery and gas is also availalble in Rose City.

DON'T FORGET A TOY FOR THE TOYS FOR TOTS PROGRAM. The marines will be there.

GLFWDA and GL4x4 clothing will be available for sale.

This post may be edited as someone reminds me that I forgot something.

GLFWDA and GL4x4 want to thank you for your participation. This should be a great day. I am looking forward to seeing you all there.

Jim

Ok, I'd convoy with ya, but I want to be there no later than 8:45 so I can be briefed on how they want to do things.  I have two friends that are comming along again in their Jeeps.  They were at Vassar.  I figure that if there are going to really be over 150 rigs there, it's going to be pretty congested.  Neil, how long do you plan on staying before we break off for the trails?

According CC to GL4x4 Site unless things got changed:

5. The gates will be opened at 9:00am. Nobody can be on the course until 11am. I'm sure you can imagine what would happen if 200+ rigs show up at 11am. Please feel free to show up at 9am and mingle with the crowds :)

Helpers should be there by 8:30 am.
