The Lounge / Our Thanksgiving Tradition
November 24, 2017, 12:04:55 PM
We have a lot of newer club members that may not know the history of our Moundsgiving event and of course a lot of folks come check out our website in the days after to see more info and find out how we did, so I thought I would provide a little background/recap here for everyone:

Back in 2007 the club discussed trying to sponsor an event at the Mounds on Thanksgiving day since there was such a crowd out there.  After some discussion at the meetings we decided to just set up at the pavilion and do sort of a "meet and greet" to introduce our club to the hundreds of folks that come through the park on Turkey Day.  We spent $50 on coffee, hot cocoa and snacks to give out at our "Warming Hut" and we met a lot of great folks.  Many people were willing to pay for their drinks and snacks and we told them they were all compliments of the club but - after many insisted on leaving us a couple bucks we wound up putting out a bucket for donations to Whaley's Children's Center.  We were surprised to find $69.00 in the bucket at the end of the day and we passed that money along to Whaley's.

The following year we did the event as a hat and glove drive to benefit the kids at Whaley's and were delighted to receive 100 hats and 81 pairs of gloves along with assorted scarves, jackets and other items.

In 2009 we partnered with The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and rebranded our Thanksgiving event as "Wheeling Against Hunger".  We put the word our to our friends in the off-roading community to bring their donations of non-perishable food items to the Mounds on the big day.  Many cups of Coffee & cocoa and plenty of no-bake cookies and other goodies were provided by the club for those dropping off their donations and we got to talk to many great people about this great sport and our club.  That first year was the largest food total we ever collected - 575 lbs of food donated and $331 in cash donations were passed on to the Food Bank.

Since then we have continued to show up every year at the mounds.  Our club members are there by 6:00 in the morning to set-up and get coffee started for the folks that are inevitably already lined up at the park and we stay into the afternoon so people can warm up when they take a break, haul a rig out for repairs, etc.  Our Grand total as of our 9th year of "wheeling against hunger" comes to $4,972.64 and 2,232 lbs of food donated.  Here is the breakdown:

2017 - $960.78 and 224 lbs of food
2016 - $546.95 and 171 lbs of food
2015 - $974.26 and 173 lbs of food
2014 - $485.77 and 190 lbs of food
2013 - $562.67 and 118 lbs of food
2012 - $333.00 and 333 lbs of food
2011 - $620.00 and 238 lbs of food
2010 - $158.21 and 210 lbs of food
2009 - $331.00 and 575 lbs of food

Thanks to all the club members who have been involved in this over the years and thanks especially to the amazing folks in the off-roading community who show up every year and give generously to this worthwhile cause.  You can find out more about the foodbank, and make a donation, here:

Jeep Talk / Public Meeting on Oakland County ORV Park
November 14, 2017, 08:14:53 AM
Here is a message from Jim Kitson that was posted on the GLFWDA FB page.  Lets see if we can't get a bunch of us in our Club shirts at this meeting and any other friends in the ORV community as well!  See the GLFWDA page for exact details.

To all my wheeling friends, it's time to poop or get off the pot;
For those of you that have shown interest in the Oakland County ORV park, now's the time. Many people have said "let me know how I can help". Well, we did that last month for the Oakland County Board of Commissioner's meeting and we had a whopping 25 people show up. LAME (and many thanks to those of you that did) But for those that didn't, we need your help.
On Wednesday December 6, 2017 @ 1:00 pm, there is a Parks Commission meeting. At this meeting, they will be discussing and hopefully voting to move forward with discussions with the MDNR. Realize what this means....... at this time, they have not even decided if they want to participate in an ORV park. They have had lots of discussions and meetings but have NEVER officially gotten on board.
So, this is one of the meetings we need to Flood with people and we need YOU!
Now for those of you that will say that you work during the day, I ask you how important is this ORV park to YOU?
Have you ever taken a half day off to leave early to head north for the weekend?
Have you ever taken a half day off to get out on the lake?
Have you ever taken a half day off to go golfing?
Have you ever taken a half day off to do some chores at home?
Have you ever taken a half day off to get out on the slopes?
The list is endless but the point is, if YOU WANT IT, and IT'S IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO YOU, YOU HAVE MADE THE TIME.
So, I'm calling you guys out, do you want this or not and are you really willing to go the extra mile? PLEASE make the effort to show up and ask your wheeling friends to make the effort. My goal is to have so many people show up that the parking lot is packed and there are people standing outside in the lobby.
THIS IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO HELP!
Now that you have made the commitment to attend, please plan to speak during the public comment. This happens at the beginning of the meeting. You don't have to say anything other than "I support the ORV park" or "I agree with him" or whatever. What is important is this; STATE YOUR NAME AND WHERE YOU ARE FROM

Events / June 2017 Events
May 09, 2017, 07:44:26 PM
What Lies Beyond Members have two different trips planned for the second weekend of June!

A Small group of us are headed out to the Bantam Heritage Jeep Festival in Butler, PA for the weekend. Hitting the Downtown Invasion Friday night, signed up for some trail rides and other fun activities.  Putting in some volunteer shifts to help with the event as well!

Another small group is planning to be up on Drummond Island for the weekend wheeling one day on the ORV routes and another at turtle ridge.  Some of the best off-roading in Michigan is right the on Drummond - it should be a great trip.

Not a member of WLB, but interested in one of these trips?  Send me a PM for details!

Events / May Events
May 09, 2017, 08:22:39 AM
What Lies Beyond members are playing and working in the month of May!  A bunch of us just got back from the Annual Jeep Blessing held by the Cadillac Jeepers up in Mesick.  As always, they continue to enhance their driver course and even some of our most experienced drivers were apparently close to having heart attacks out on Chadville!  Great time had by all!

Our second trip in May is our first Trail Maintenance trip up in Atlanta, MI The weekend of May 19-21.  WLB does the grant work for GLFWDA on the Atlanta Route.  While we are out on the trails for the weekend, we are working - clearing fallen trees, cutting back brush, and maintaining the signage standards along the 70+ miles of ORV route in the area.  Of Course, we don't forget that Saturday the 20th is All Things Jeep's Designated "Go Topless Day" and once we are done our work for the day, the club is buying food for a cook-out back at camp at Clear Lake State Park.   Club members can see more details posted in the member forums, anyone else interested in joining us can PM me for info!

The Lounge / GLFWDA Land Use Committee
May 08, 2017, 07:55:11 AM
At the Great Lakes Four Wheel Drive association Quarterly meeting they announced a new Land Use Committee Chairperson, Mike Wade.  Mike spoke about needing a true committee to help address land use issues throughout the state.  He is looking for volunteers that may have some free time to occasionally attend ORV Meetings and Public Hearings throughout the state.  He does not expect a huge open ended commitment to go all over the state all the time, but is hoping to find numerous people that might be able to cover a specific area and even if you could only get to one or two things per year it would be helpful.

You do not need to be a land use expert to volunteer - You are a member of our user group and can attend these public meetings to take notes and report back to the Land Use committee o what is being discussed and you can certainly offer your feedback as a member of the full size OHV community.  If you might have some interest/availability.  PM me and I will get you in touch with Mr. Wade or you can email directly to landuse@glfwda.org.

The Meeting will be held Saturday April 29th near port Huron at The Dorsey House Restaurant (6008 Beard Rd, Clyde, Michigan 48049) Meeting will be held at Noon and you can order off the menu if you want to have your lunch there during the meeting.  After the meeting, they have organized a scenic drive which is going to end at the base of the BlueWater Bridge for a Photo OP and there is a chance to tour a retired US Coast Guard Cutter for a small Charge.

Since this meeting is within an hour for many of us, we highly encourage club members to participate!  Sounds like a fun afternoon planned.

Trail Rides / September Wheeling Choices
August 08, 2016, 07:40:10 AM
Members of What Lies Beyond will have two choices in September... The Weekend of the 24, 25 some of us will be heading up to Grayling once again to explore and add more trail miles for our winter wheeling event.  A few more ambitious members are considering a run up into Canada for our own mini Gitchee Gumee run since that event is not officially happening this year.

Non-members are always welcome as a guest if either of these options sounds like fun to you.  Tow points front and rear required and CB radio strongly encouraged.  If you'd like details on either of these trips, send me a PM and I will keep you posted.

Trail Rides / August 2016
August 08, 2016, 07:35:34 AM
Looks like our only "official" event in August will be our Trail Maintenance Trip to Atlanta, MI the weekend of August 26-28.  This is a weekend where we complete the work required by our grant with the DNR through GLFWDA.  Cutting back brush, removing deadfalls, replacing confidence markers and other signage, etc.  Its still a day on the trails in the outdoors and a nice time camping with the club for the weekend.

PM me fore details if you are interested in joining us for the weekend.

Trail Rides / July Events
June 13, 2016, 09:34:35 AM
A large group from WLB will be up at Silver lake Sand Dunes for our Annual weekend July 15-17.  In addition to some great wheeling on the dunes, we usually hit the beach for a while in the afternoon and definitely make it back to the park to watch the sun go down over Lake Michigan every night.  This is always a relaxing and fun trip.  Looking for a great club to go have fun with this summer? Guests are welcome to join us, PM me for details.

Also...

The last weekend of July we will be doing our fourth annual River tubing trip in Evart, MI.  The last few years we have squeezed in some two tracking in/around the area but this year we are parking the Jeeps and just planning a fun weekend on the river.  Bring your fishing poles, river tubes, and swimsuits and prepare to have a great weekend.  Nightly campfire featuring Amazing dump cakes, delicious Hobo Pies, and maybe a S'more or two!  This event is held on a club member's property and is consequently a members only event.  See what you are missing?  PM me for details about membership.

The Lounge / 4WD Awareness Training
May 11, 2016, 05:59:30 PM
At April's meeting I asked about interest in a 4WD Safety/Awareness class for our club again this year and there was no one present that expressed a desire to do it.  Paul has had some individual requests from non-members and another Club has asked about a class, so it looks like we are going to go ahead and put one on the Calendar.  We are looking at possibly Saturday June 25 at Rocks & Valleys.  If anyone is interested in the class, please post up here.  Cost has been about $45.00 and includes your admission to the park, Your workbook, and a boxed lunch.

The class itself is 1/2 day classroom and 1/2 day practical skills in the park.  We cover components of your Offroad Vehicle, Off-road spotting and general etiquette, driving techniques for various terrain, recovery using winches, recovery straps, etc.  Great for new off-roaders and not a bad reminder for experienced folks as well. I would think on the outside we could only fit about 10 people in the room we have for the class, so any WLB members that are interested please let us know ASAP.

Events / First Scooter's Jeep Night of the Year!
May 11, 2016, 05:50:28 PM
Don't forget that the folks from Unlimited Offroad are starting up Jeep Night at Scooters again beginning Thursday May 12th - that's Tomorrow!  Last year they had a bunch of really sweet vendor rigs there for the kick-off party and they had some really nice giveaways and such.  Lets have a great showing of WLB orange so we are well represented at this "local" event.

Unfortunately, I am stuck down in Indiana taking care of some Dishonest Employee issues, so I will have to miss this one.  If you are going, be sure to have a spotted card or two or a brochure that you can hand out to anyone that expresses some interested in the club.

If you haven't heard, they will be doing the Jeep night every other week this year instead of weekly.  I think we had a pretty good time last summer hanging out there on thursdays, so I am looking forward to it again this year!

We had 6 rigs playing up at Rocks & Valleys Saturday.  I didn't get too many pics, but I know Jeremy's wife was snapping away, so she may have a few to add...

Events / Dunes Blessing and Festival
February 12, 2016, 08:50:36 AM
The weekend of Saturday June 4th and Sunday the 5th they are doing an event at Silver Lake Sand dunes that we might be interested in...

When I first saw the link for a first annual "Jeep Invasion" at the Dunes I thought it was just basically a marketing ploy to get a bunch of business in the area.  While it certainly is that still, I have Found that this is planned for the weekend where they do a "Dunes Blessing" which is actually in its 5th year I think and then I saw that they are doing a "Tunes, Brews & Dunes Festival" Saturday afternoon/evening with the actual blessing event scheduled Sunday at noon.  So, it seems like there is actually some cool stuff to do rather than it just being named Jeep invasion weekend and expecting us all to rush out there because the word Jeep is in the title of the event.

We don't have anything on our calendar for June Yet, though we may do the 4x4 class again the last weekend, so this might be a nice chance for those that can't make the July trip to go out as a group to the Dunes or an extra fun weekend the throw in for the summer if you want to do both since it is a good 6 weeks before the July Trip.
