Spotted and Sightings / No Spotted post for 2015?
February 10, 2016, 04:18:01 PM
When I just posted that last one, I see that no one had posted up a spotted in all of 2015 - weird.  I guess we are a lot more geographically diverse that we used to be, so less chance of running into each other...

Spotted and Sightings / I was spotted
February 10, 2016, 04:16:23 PM
Alan came and picked me up in my Jeep to go back up to his place for the SuperBowl on Sunday and when we pulled in to his driveway - a black Jeep followed us in.  Turns out it was Adam Shoemaker from Unlimited Offroad (who lives just up the Street from Alan) who jumped out and said "I thought that was your Jeep!"  We wound up standing around chatting for 10-15 minutes in typical Jeeper Fashion.

Just another fun moment that I would not have had were it not for being a Jeep owner... I doubt too many Hyundai owners glance at another Hyundai from 1/4 mile back and think "that looks like Bob's Elantra... Let me follow him and say Hi"

Jeep Talk / Jeep Superbowl Commercials
February 10, 2016, 04:03:47 PM
How about 'em!? I was so awed by the first one (Portraits) I dashed to the computer to share it on our FB and it had likes and shares within a couple minutes... Then later in the game they had the second (4x4ever) spot.  After the very reverent tone of the first one, it took me a second to warm up to the jazzier tone of the second, but by the time they built to showing an actual Jeep Wave accompanied by the Lyrics "4x4 the wave that's how we say 'cheers' " I just about wanted to jump out of my chair and applaud.

Jeep really knocked it out of the park in my opinion!  Which was your favorite?

Trail Rides / April Calendar
January 26, 2016, 08:00:59 AM
April is looking pretty busy - in addition to our Pennsylvania trip on the 7th-10th, there is the Michigan Wheelers Spring opener - the Drummond island Invasion April 15-17, the Jeeps on the Mac event happening April 22-23, the Cadillac Jeepers Blessing of the Jeeps on April 30th.  Members from What Lies Beyond will certainly be showing up at these and other events - we usually caravan up for things like this as well.  Sounds like the kind of stuff that would be a blast for you and your family, doesn't it?  For more info, send me a PM and I'll keep you updated - better yet come to our next meeting this Sunday January 31st to find out more.

Trail Rides / March Trip
January 15, 2016, 03:00:12 PM
With the Late February Run, and wanting to wait out any snow, our March trip will actually depart March 31 to drive out to Pennsylvania where we will hit Rausch Creek On April 1st and 2nd before driving home Sunday April 4th.  We also heard another park opened north of Rausch, so we'll look into that and maybe shoot there one of the days. We will look into camping options and figure everything out as we get a little closer.

Does an out of state camping trip to wheel at a premium off-road venue sound like something you'd like to be doing?  Think about coming to our Next meeting on January 31st and get to know us.  You could be joining us in Pennsylvania this spring and at other great spots throughout the year!  PM me for more details.

Trail Rides / Februray Wheeling
January 15, 2016, 02:45:01 PM
After a Pause after our Big Operation: Snowbound event, we talked about possible doing a trip late Janaury/Early February to Bundy Hill since we have never wheeled there in the snow.  We are posting that up in the members forums to discuss and nail down a date.

One thing we always do is a snow wheeling trip the Last Sunday in February.  It sounds like we are thinking this will be out in West Branch/St. Helen again this year.  Last year we got a little lost and wound up on some pretty tight trails - hopefully we can stay off the goat paths this year!

If you'd like more information about either of these trips, PM me and I will keep you up to date as we firm up plans.  You are welcome as a guest with WLB as long as you have tow points front and rear and we highly recommend a CB radio.

Trail Rides / October Trips
September 21, 2015, 08:11:25 AM
We have our Fall Color tour Scheduled this year in the UP the weekend of October 2-4 (Driving up the night of the 1st).  We will be staying in Newberry and wandering the numerous two tracks while on our way to the pictured rocks, waterfalls (Including Tahquamenon) and  Lighthouses.  Should be a fun, relaxing weekend taking in the natural beauty of our State.

We may do another Grayling day trip to continue mapping for Operation: Snowbound sometime mid-month.

Some of us will be out at Jeep Creep in Gladwin the weekend of the 23-25.  Dress your Jeep up for the parade, trunk-or-treat for the kids, vendors, obstacle course, etc.  Guaranteed to be a good time.

If you would like information about joining the club as guest on any of the trail rides, send a PM to LPM606 and I will keep you looped in!

Miscellaneous Items For Sale/Trade / Moving Sale
July 24, 2015, 10:21:56 PM
Well, as many of you know, I will be moving from a 1900 Sq Ft house with a basement to a 1000 sq ft apartment. That means there are numerous items I will be unable to take with me and I would like to offer the club a chance to snatch some items up.  I am not positive what all I will have, but think all my outdoor rakes, shovels, hedge trimmers and the like.  I will be starting to pack this weekend so I should be able to start creating a list here.  Make   me a reasonable offer and you can come grab it or pick it up when you come help me move (hint, hint!)

I know I have a pretty nice little workbench downstairs - four drawers wood top, pegboard, etc.

I have wood computer desk with hutch

Wood & Metal shelf unit from the garage

Set of Lange Door hangers for your Jeep Doors, still in box

Those are the things that pop into mind right now... I can try to post pictures if anybody has interest in any of that...

The Lounge / Thursday Jeep Nights
July 22, 2015, 09:23:17 AM
The Jeep Nights at Scooters seem to have lost some momentum...  They are setting aside tons of space for Jeeps, they have a band playing, food and drink specials and Unlimited brings prizes every week, they have really made an effort to create a nice little Thursday night hangout.  Any Jeepers reading this are encouraged to come check it out.  See modified jeeps up close and personal and talk to their owners about what they have done.  Chat with the crew from Unlimited Offroad Centers about their "plan your build, build your plan" philosophy and most of all, hang out with your fellow Jeepers to talk shop, trade tails from the trails, etc.

Events / 4WD Training Class
June 06, 2015, 10:19:26 AM
For the second year in a row, our UFWDA Master trainers will be conducting the UFWDA 4WD Saftey and Awareness training class in June.  Class will be held on June 27th at Rocks and Valleys Offroad Park in Harrison, MI.   Class is 1/2 day classroom & 1/2 day practical driving and recovery skills out in the park.  Great opportunity for new off-roaders to learn how to drive in various off-pavement conditions, and how to safely use that bag of recovery gear in the back of the Jeep.  Even experienced off-roaders may find the class to be a great refresher and may un-learn a bad habit or two...

We have a few new folks in the club that are planning to go, but I believe we will have some room to open this up to the public for anyone interested.  We will nail down exact costs and such here in the next week or so, but it should be about $45.00 per rig with a slightly reduced charge for a second driver in the sames vehicle.  This will include admission to the park, all training materials, and a boxed lunch. Any questions or if you would like to reserve a spot, send me a PM...

Tech Talk / River Raider Snrokel
May 31, 2015, 09:57:59 AM
As many know, I am drawn to water like a moth to flame so I have been eyeing various snorkel kits for the last couple years.  Various other upgrades and repairs have pushed back the purchase, but i finally pulled the trigger on the River Raider JK Expedition Snorkel.  I settled on this one for a few reasons... #1 Most snorkels run along to the top of the A Pillar and, while I like water crossing, I don't really plan to actually submerge the Jeep up to my head in water and I would like to keep the A pillars free for lights and other accessoires that tend to use the various spots on the A pillar for mounting.  Plus, I consider the tube running along the pillar to be just a big item to snag on branches and such and get torn off.  The river raider snorkel is is a cowl version similar to a hummer.  #2  - most kits use the factory air box intake point so its still not getting more air like a cold air intake. The river Raider kit modifies the factory air box to allow a full 3"diameter tube for the air - seems to me that has got to be a bit better.

So, I have read and re-read the instructions for months as I planned the purchase and yesterday had the Jeep over at Mark's to do the install.  Overall it took about 7 hours, but that included almost an hour to get the battery re-installed.  We keep talking about making an install video on one of these projects but we always get started and think of it an hour in... so, no video, but here are a few pics of the process.

They have you seal off the factory intake and drill a new new hole in the air box.  This new hole actually becomes the output and you use the original output spot that went to the throttle body as the new input.  Problem with the river raider kit: template for the hole cut was printed in the wrong orientation and had no center point marked, causing us to have to spend a little time getting it right.

For everyone that got a chuckle out of the pic a while back of Mark with the giant adjustable wrench, we thought this one was a pretty funny counterpart.

After modifying the air box, the next step was to relocate the battery, they provide a new tray to turn it sideways allowing room for the snorkel hose.  The instructions don't mention it, but to get the nuts on the new bolts for the battery tray, we wound up having to remove the liner from the front fender so we could reach.

Next we had to pull down the wiring loom, cut out the insulation and place and install a provided metal template for the hole in the firewall.  Turns out the template is needed as the was no metal for the center bit of the hole saw to bite into - there was a hole covered with some kind of film... The template should have been thick enough to seat the hole saw, but was not even as thick as the teeth, making this step the worst part of the job.

Thankfully the hole in the cowl was much easier and as a result, much cleaner.

90 degree elbow connected between the two flanges and hose clamped together... Starting to look like we may be on to something here!

Factory air box reinstalled and snorkel all hooked up!  Funny how its the only clean thing under my hood. One side-track that lost a lot of time had nothing to do with their kit, but in turning the battery and moving the wire looms, it was a bit of a project to get all the wiring reconnected to the batter - winch leads, CB, Tans Guage, E-Locker, etc. made for quite a jumble and with the new position some stuff was too long and had to be re-routed and other were a bit short.  probably lost an hour messing with this.  Didn't help that I dropped one of the nuts from the terminal and we had to pull the battery out to retrieve it and start over!

River Raider logo even matched my paint!

I purchased separately their Breather tube extension kit, but we ran out of time.  This kit will run all the breather tubes form the diffs, trans and transfer case up to this closed system - a real nice insurance policy considering how much I love to take the Jeep out for a swim!
