Hey, this might sound kind of dumb, but the oil change guy does this for free on my cherokee, but, how do I check/change the fluids for my powertrain parts? I just bought this thing and want to make sure the diff/transfer case are in good order.

should be a square fitting (3/8 drive) one on each diff.
two on the t-case one up high to fill one low to check level,
and the same with the tranny if its a stick

anyone please correct me if im wrong :D

you can use a 3/8's ratchet on the front diff cover   the rear may be a rubber plug if its a dana  35 the transfer case might take a 1 1/4 socket

So, if the fluid is old or low in the differentials, do I add in the same hole?

not sure with the dana, but yes if there is not a full hole further up

like the others said for the diffs....
for the ax-5...it should have 2 bolts, one low, one high.....take the top one out and fill until it comes out that hole
for the np231, pretty much the same...
if you have any doubt as to water in fluids, go get some gear oil (PU, very stinky) and change diffs and tranny (pennzoil syncromesh is good but expensive for the ax-5)...and i think atf for your TC

So I've got six quarts of 80w 90 gear lube. I'm told that is what I'll need for my differentials and transmission. Is it the same stuff for my transfer case and gear box too?

Okay, so this is what my research, and you guys too, are telling me, (I'm a little confused, so please correct me).

Any kind of heavy weight gear lube in the differentials 75w90, 80w90, GL rating doesn't much matter GL-3 4 5.

The Transmission needs a GL -3 Lube, NO GL -5.

T/C needs some kind of ATF. Dexron I'm being told.

So. Dexron what? Or just ATF Dexron?

Aaaand, can a fluid rated GL-3 GL -4 AND GL -5 (good for all of these) be used in the AX-5?
