Rocky road: Mounds ORV Park draws off-roaders from across Gr

GENESEE COUNTY -- Forget the roast turkey and pumpkin pie. Come Thanksgiving morning, hundreds of hardcore off-road enthusiasts will be chewing up rocks and spitting out mud at the Mounds ORV Area in the heart of mid-Michigan.

The 370-acre Genesee County Parks facility offers the Lower Peninsula's only public ORV rock crawl, squat in the middle of an off-roader's paradise of wooded trails, mud pits and scramble areas.

The popular playground is open daily and regularly draws off-roaders from across the Great Lakes region.

But Thanksgiving has become its biggest day of the year, drawing a typical crowd of nearly 500 vehicles by early afternoon.

The Thanksgiving event is also home to an annual charity drive for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, with visitors donating cash and nonperishable food items at a warming tent hosted by the What Lies Beyond Jeep Club.
